The tens of minutes long period of sheer terror that those who died must have experienced is what gets me.
Hortensia the fifth photo is just jaw-dropping.
wow, just saw this on the news.
truly devastating.. sorry i have no words to offer anyone other than that we're thinking of anyone who'd been affected..

if you grow up speaking english and you move to mexico you don't automatically speak spanish, know customs, understand currency, possess skills.
for self-support or have any special insight into latino mindset.. .
why would you expect leaving jehovah's witnesses would leave you any less ill-equipped to navigate the real world?.
6.How do you actually FEEL? Do you feel at all? Or, is there a vague sense of doom floating around you because you once KNEW EVERYTHING and it was ALL TRUE? Absolute thinking is a drug. Just like any street drug. You will have withdrawl. Expect it.
Every time I see a Climate Change doom/gloom headline, I'm right back to JW mentality: humanity is doomed without divine intervention. Only of course now I'm not expecting any divine intervention.
So what do i do? You know, the climate change stuff IS pretty scary! I haven't learned yet how to effectively deal with the reality that we humans may very well indeed be doing ourselves in with our addiction to activities that are significantly altering the composition of our atmosphere.
How do I accept this possible reality and yet not be paralyzed by fear and hopelessness? Climate Change is just one of many that gets me every time. By nature I'm a fearful person, and its fearfulness that made me such a easy fish for the JWs to reel in.
It's interesting to see how apocalypticism is becoming part of popular culture. A headline from (satirical news website) The Onion from a few months ago: "Future warlord of what was once Nebraska born in Omaha hospital".
judging by the titles/themes of the talks , dramas ,new releases ,tracts, brochures , etc,.i dont think their was anything that would enthuse any witness to renewed activity.on the contrary i think it would demoralize you .their was nothing their to inspire a new convert let alone one who has been in for decades to keep on in service to this organization.
for arguments sake ,i was baptised in 1961 if i was still in , at this convention ,i would be asking ,when is the great tribulatin to begin?
who is the king of the north ?
Let's face it - a lot of JWs LIKE being JWs. For this reason alone, JWism has plenty of years left ahead of it. But I can't even imagine what torture it is to be raised in it these days. As a previous poster alluded, their claim to fame for decades has been distributing printed information from door to door. But the magazines have become a boring, out-of-touch, silly, insider-jargon-filled, half-hearted shadow of their former glory. It's hard to imagine anyone, at least in the west, being taken in by any of the current literature. I'm sure there's still the occasional convert, but for the most part, go to any KH and try to find anyone under 40 that actually converted to JWism. Good luck. They aren't there.
ever since mitt romney turned the spotlight on the lds church a growing tsunami of disaffection has been accelerated and brought to a head.. the lds core faithful members are leaving in increasing numbers such that growth has not simply stagnated in the west but it has actively reversed.
to their credit the church is responding aggressively but not only is it too late, it is an impossible task.
you can only paint sh*t so many ways.
The thing about the WTS is that it has NOTHING TO OFFER other than authoritarianism. That's all it really is anymore. They've painted themselves into a corner where liberalization is impossible - because the religion itself is so utterly dry and lifeless, that without the fear and threats and the claims of AUTHORITAHHHH, why would ANYONE continue with that drudgery?

We, God's spirit-directed FAITHFUL SLAVE of Christ's prophecy, got you all worked up, showed you how APPROPRIATE it would be for 1975 to be the year. AWW we're sorry! We're even sorry to ourselves! See how sorry we are! Now obey.

As of this moment I haven’t left, but every once in a while my mind reverts back to the “what if it IS true” state.
So, let's say that, you know, it's da troof or something.
What, then, are we to expect? Kinda stating something similar to what I've said in other threads here, but - are fireballs going to just suddenly start raining down from the sky, wiping out civilization and every man, woman, and child on the earth except JWs? Or will giant cracks open up in the earth, swallowing people alive? Again, everybody except JWs?
Think about what THE TRUTH means, according to JWism. It's horrible! And it's a ridiculous fantasy.
Don't let 'em scare ya. Scaring people is their stock-in-trade, and millions of people dying will never live because of their stupid self-deluded bullshit.
i need some help fleshing out an illustration that explains how people can be biased but still reach honest conclusions.
i had jws claim that "evolutionists" are biased towards evolution.
if they were biased towards something else they'd reach different conclusions.
Well of course there is such a thing as confirmation bias, which scientists or anybody else could be guilty of. JWs are probably the most guilty of it of all people - virtually EVERYTHING proves that they have da twoof, in one way or another.
It's easy though, to just dismiss evolution as a "wanting to believe" on the part of those who have accepted it as fact. You're pretty much throwing boatloads, truckloads, of people under the bus as being intellectually dishonest.
In the insular minds of JWs, "scientists" are just this vague, faceless crowd of people that don't really matter cuz they don't know jeehooby. I think that those are the sort of barriers that you have to work through with JWs, if you can. Scientists are living, breathing individuals, who eat, sleep, read, marry, have kids, do the same things that a lot of JWs do, but unlike JWs, they rely on observation and evidence to arrive at truth, not an unending stream of propaganda from a central body that tells them what to think and dares them to disobey. And there's boatloads, truckloads of evidence to support evolution.
i don't know any details myself, but i was wondering what is the watchtower's timeline for getting completely out of brooklyn?
i know they have been building a new hq in patterson.
(i think) they have also been selling many brooklyn properties.
Look to the Great Pyramids for your answer.
what would be the most important things you think someone should be aware about jws if they are planning on getting baptised as a jw?
imagine you are on a plane and get talking to the person next to you.
you find out they are considering becoming a jw but they are not sure.
I'd just try to have as relaxed a conversation with them as I could. I'd ask them what they find attractive about the JWs, and try to make some points that not all is as it may seem on the surface. I'd tell them to take it really slow, and be sure to look into what critics of the WTS have to say.
the july 15 study watchtower uses all 4 study articles to try to inculcate into every witnesses' mind that the governing body is indisputably god's sole channel of communication on earth.
to do so, it uses a multitude of scriptures along with seriously flawed un-inspired reasoning.
the foundation stone of this watchtower's blatant agenda is the claim that when jesus used only a few to dispense the physical food to the many, he was setting a principle which would be applied to the distribution of spiritual food after he returned to heaven.
4 study articles. Wow. Good times at the Kingdom Hall. LOL.
